Q: What is Level 2 armor?
A:
Here’s the official answer: CE Level 2 limb armor conforms to CE Level 2 standard if the average transmitted force of nine tests is less than 20 kN for limb armor and 9kN for back armor.

Translated into everyday English, CE Level 2 armor dissipates force better than CE Level 1 .

Q: Do I need Level 2 Armor?
A:
Truly it is a preference as to what level of protection you are looking for. For most street and dual sport riders riding safely and within the speed limit, CE Level 1 protection is sufficient. Companies still produce Level 1 armor and some are made with even the newest technologies. At Bohn Armor, we’ll be riding with the new Level 2 product as it is designed specifically for our garments to make them extremely comfortable, lighter, more ventilated and come with the latest technology. We feel that our newest iteration is our best yet!

Q: Is this like D3O®? Does it harden on impact?
A:
D3O® is a non-Newtonian polymer which means that it is soft and malleable in a non-stressed state but it instantly hardens when sudden stress (impact) is applied.

The Bohn Level 2 Armor, on the other hand, features progressive absorption as demonstrated in Newton’s Third Law of Motion (for every action [force] in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction). That means the air that is embedded within the cells of the foam resists force in direct response to how much force it is being subjected to. This characteristic allows the armor to effectively dissipate force at both high and low-impact speeds.

Q: What is the average lifespan on the Level 2 Armor?
A:
Depending on the amount of riding you do, as well as your individual riding conditions, the viscoelastic foam could potentially last up to ten years.

Also, keep in mind that armor technology improves greatly every few years so you should find that each new set you purchase is much further ahead in quality, fit, feel and technology from what you had before.

Q: How do I take care of the armor pieces? What’s the best way to store them when I’m not riding?
A:
We recommend removing the armor from your Bohn gear from time to time to clean it as detergent residue, salt (including body salt) and moisture can stick to it and negatively affect the armor.

Armor pieces should NOT be placed in the washing machine or dryer, but may be wiped clean with a damp cloth if they become soiled.

During the off-season, we recommend storing in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. It is always a good idea to give everything a thorough cleaning before storing it away and we also recommend not storing it in a rolled or folded position as that can cause undue stress on the armor, causing it to wear out quicker.

Q: Does it need to be replaced after a crash?
A:
Bohn Level 2 Armor has long-lasting crash construction and is meant for repeat use. If you go down, merely inspect for visible damage. If the damage is significant then you will need to replace the armor piece(s), if it is simply scratched, you do not have to replace it, simply sand off any hard or sharp edges and continue to use.

Q: Will these fit in the Bohn gear that I already own?
A:
The new Bohn Level 2 Armor pieces have been designed to fit within the existing pockets of your Bohn Armored Pants, Shirts and Shorts. They are universally sized so they are also compatible with most other brands of protective gear.

Q: What side of the flexible flat armor goes against my body?
A:
While your first instinct may be to insert the armor with the interlocking part away from you, it is actually designed to have the solid part as the outer surface. The channels between the polygon “nubs” allow for more airflow to the skin, which leads to a more comfortable ride overall.

Q. Can I use these protectors in the cold?
A. Yes you can. But you need to warm them to your body before you use them in the cold or they could crack and this is not warrantied. See information on next drop down below for care instructions for more information on this.

Q: I am sensitive to latex. Is your armor safe for me to wear?
A:
The comfort of our customers ranks second only to their safety. The Bohn Level 2 Armor is latex free.

Cleaning:

We recommend removing the armor from your gear from time to time to clean it as detergent residue, salt (including body salt) and moisture can stick to it and negatively affect the armor.

Armor pieces should NOT be placed in the washing machine or dryer, but may be wiped clean with a damp cloth if they become soiled.

Temperature:

We recommend storing and wearing your protectors in temperatures above <60 degrees. Extreme temperatures will not affect the effectiveness of the protector, but extreme cold in addition to stress on the protector can cause pieces to crack.

A such, do not stress the protectors in cold weather conditions. For example, leaving pieces in a cold garage and then putting them on can cause armor with articulation to crack at the articulation points.

Just use good judgment when wearing the protectors and do your best to keep them stored in temperatures above 60 degrees for the longest life. We also recommend that if the protectors are in temps <65 that you warm them against your body before bending or flexing them.

DO NOT use frozen protectors–bring them inside to warm up and then use.

Warranty:

Limb armor, like your helmet, has an expiration date typically 5-10 years from manufacture. Cracking of the armor pieces is not warrantied as this means one of two things.

  1. The armor placement is incorrect on your body (see proper placement graphic below).
    or
  2. It has been subjected to cold extreme temperatures and then bent or used while frozen or cold. These pieces will not crack or have issues if stored properly and worn in recommended temperatures and warmed against the body in cooler temps before using. However, if your protector is affected and you are confident that you have taken care of your protector, please give us a call.

***Please remember these are designed as motorcycle protective pieces. If you are using them for other sports and they crack or break, we would appreciate your honesty. Motorcycle protection does not move the same way as if you were to use these pieces in other sports. So please keep that in mind.

Cleaning:
We recommend removing the armor from your Bohn gear from time to time to clean it as detergent residue, salt (including body salt) and moisture can stick to it and negatively affect the armor.

Armor pieces should NOT be placed in the washing machine or dryer, but may be wiped clean with a damp cloth if they become soiled.

Temperature:
We recommend storing your protectors in temperatures above 60 degrees. Extreme temperatures will not affect the effectiveness of the protector, but extreme cold in addition to stress on the protector (ie. bending of the armor when cold) can cause the pieces to crack.

A such, do not stress the protectors in extremely cold weather conditions. (For example, leaving pieces in a cold garage and then putting them on can cause armor with articulation to crack at the articulation points.)

Just use good judgment when wearing the protectors and try your best to keep them against your warm body. DO NOT use frozen protectors–bring them inside to warm up and then use.

Warranty:
Limb armor, like your helmet, has an expiration date typically 5-10 years from manufacture.

If you have Bohn armor that is 5-10 years old and is "crumbling", you need to replace it. If only one piece is crumbling, the other pieces are sure to follow. This means your armor has expired and all pieces should be replaced as they were likely manufactured at the same time.

Cracking of Level 2 armor pieces is not warrantied as this means one of two things:

  • The armor placement is incorrect on your body (see proper placement graphic below).
    OR
  • It has been subjected to cold extreme temperatures and then bent or used while frozen or cold.

If your protector is affected and you are confident that you have taken care of your protector, please give us a call.

Installation

  • When installing, armor can be squeezed to fit into pockets but the armor must be warmed to room temperature.
  • Armor can be trimmed as needed
  • Fabric backed armor should be inserted with the fabric facing the outside of the garment

Bohn armor pants are easy to use and comfortable. They are unobtrusive and work well on warm or cool days. I use them both on the road and off.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

The original armor felt substantial and protective. I was surprised after 10 years or so when it started deteriorating and I knew that I had to replace it. I was surprised to find that they had changed the armor to something more thin. Extremely thin. It doesn’t inspire much confidence. Is it comfortable? Sure but it doesn’t feel protective at all. If it were double the thickness it would still be comfortable and probably protect much better. Here’s hoping that I never find out.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Store owner replied: John, We are sorry that you are not feeling as confident as you were with the older polymer-style armor. We can certainly assure you that the new Level 2 armor is much more protective and will provide a much better level of protection than your other armor, despite the thin nature of the armor. You are more than welcome to double up if you want to, if that makes you feel a little more comfortable, but it really is not necessary. Please feel free to watch our video on the change to the newer, thinner armor - https://youtu.be/lBh9tnQ3o_Q and check out this website to learn about armor and protection. https://www.motocap.com.au/impact-protectors. We hope the video and the link will help make you feel a little more comfortable. Please also reach out to us if you have any more questions. Sincerely, Bohn Body Armor

I bought this set to replace worn, CE level 1 armor. The new level 2 is less bulky, which fits even better under my Draggin’ jeans or mesh summer pants. Don’t even know they’re there.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

I recently upgraded to Level 2 armor in my Bohn Armor pants. The old armor was Level 1 and 7 years old. The new armor fits perfectly against my legs, especially the hips and thighs. The new armor is more flexible and contours for a better fit. Thanks again for your design and protection, I think it’s the best way to hold armor in place, compared to other methods 😎

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

I have the older Bohn armor body tights with full armor that needed knee replacements. I called customer support and they provided me excellent advice and recommended to replace all of the pads (hip, tailbone and thigh) in addition to the knees. The reason is the energy absorption ability of the material degrades over time and mine were over 10 years old. The new replacement armor pads are much better than the old ones. I now have the confidence that I am fully protected. Wear your gear and stay safe my friends.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

I have used this gear for about 12 years. I have updated to the new pads for the bottoms. Love This Protective Gear!

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

I received a call from Bohn regarding my recent review. Blew my mind that they really read customs reviews and genuinely care about their customers. Wow.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Store owner replied: ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

My old body armor started to basically disintegrate. So, got a new set for my pants. I’m not sure if I like the new ones when compared to the old ones. New ones feel not as substantial as the old ones. They do seem more flexible, but I m just not sure how protective they would be in a fall. The hip armor needed to be reshaped a bit to make it fit better in the pant pocket.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Store owner replied: Steve, Thank you for a great call. Hoping that we eased your mind that this new protection is superior to the older style protectors available years ago. We are thrilled you came back to us for your new protection and to "refill" your pants with new armor. Enjoy and we hope you never have to use them. Wink wink! Have a wonderful rest of your day! Kristen Bohn Armor

The new armor looks great! Love the flexibility. Big improvement over the older stuff. Originally, I noticed a piece of the old tailbone protector had broken off. Rather than just replace that piece, I decided to go for the whole replacement kit. Good thing I did because as I was replacing the old with the new, I noticed the knee/shin protector was separating, too. That would not have been good in a crash. The new knee/shin protector is way more robust. Thanks Bohn for making high quality protection and continuing to improve its design!

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Very thin. Don’t stay in place well. I don’t see them doing much if I crash. I usually wear my other motorcycle pants.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

BOHN BODY ARMOR is my go-to protection for every riding season—summer or winter. It delivers coverage exactly where it’s needed, giving me peace of mind without sacrificing comfort or mobility. The gear stays in place, ready to protect if and when it’s called upon, while still allowing me to ride freely and comfortably.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Time flies, did not realize my gear was 10 years old until the thigh pads disintegrated. Ordered a new set to refresh. Been down before without Bohn gear and it was not pretty, looking to expect the unexpected in it's best capacity.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Awesome, reliable company. Products are outstanding, service is even better.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

The new design is more comfortable than the original pads I purchased years ago. So flexible they almost feel like the jeans I was wearing on my last ride.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

My old pads disintegrated. These new ones are better in warm weather because they are textured on the side that touches your skin so sweat can escape. I have never crashed with the Bohn armor. I hope it helps if I ever do.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Finally replace my body armor after about 12 years. The new pads feel more flexible. Maybe the original pieces dried out, but I'm happy.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Besides high quality products, their customer service rocks!

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

The new material is not shaped as well nor as fitted to the pants pockets. The larger flat pieces, especially the thigh pieces, tend to roll up in the pants during handling. I have had to devote time to putting them back in place and removing the rolls when getting into them. I do trust them to control skin abrasion if I go down. I have had two low sides with the old style armour. I and the armor survived very nicely.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

I made a mistake in the ordering process. Apparently, one of the pay apps changed my address to an old address and I did not catch it. Bohn Armor stepped up and valued customer service over standing their ground over what was ultimately my error. I can’t thank them enough! I will make sure to reward their customer service in the very near future!

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Comfort and feel are great. Should make knee and shoulders out of the same material.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Recently got the Level 2 Shorts replacement armor and I love them! Much more flexible than the pieces that came with my pants originally.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

After 6 years and 35,000 miles my old armor knee pads tore, my fault. They make tall sizes now so I upgraded. The new hip, thigh and tail pads are super thin. It doesn't seem like they would be as protective but they could be. The knee pads are the same size but they feel softer. Overall a true upgrade in comfort. With these new pads you really won't notice your wearing them even more.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

I almost purchased new Bohn Armor pants since the armor from my current pants was falling apart. I was glad to see the "Pants Kit" (armor only) that fits my existing fabric shell from 10 years ago. Highly recommended, hopefully the new armor will last just as long as the previous.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Replaced the old armor inserts and couldn't be happier. Very flexible and don't know it is there. Gave the thigh and hip armor a test on an off-road ride last weekend. Klim pants and Bohn Armor make a good combination. No wear and tear from a low side on gravel.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Great quality and comfort. Only issue is that the thigh pads tend to roll up when lowering the leggings, requiring adjustment upon raising them back to or putting them on.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Like everyone else has said, the new armor is a vast improvement over the old so job well done. Fortunately, have not have had to test it out by sliding down a road but I am sure it will work well!!!!

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

The original armor started to crumble after 5 years. I was happy to see the armor had been updated with new technology that makes it thinner and much more comfortable to wear. The new armor is also easier to remove and put back in when it's time to wash. Thanks Bohn Armor, you guys Rock!

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

I liked the upgrade; the functionality of it is very well thought out, discreet, yet resilient.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

I just want to say that we love our new level 2 armor! It fits in our current jackets and pants perfectly. The best part is it's flexible! For the females, this is a huge improvement of the thigh pads for when nature calls ??. Thank you so much. PS. Your shipping time was really impressive.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Used this kit to update my old armor and use in my second pair of pants. I'm lazy and didn't like changing armor from one pair to the other. They much more comfortable.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

It's lighter and conforms to me better. It feels cooler, too, I don't seem to sweat with it on as much. Fortunately I haven't fallen so I can't speak to the protection level. It adds expense, but what is your body worth?

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

this set is GREAT... way more comfort in wearing, even using the tailbone piece which I removed on original set of armor. SPEND YOUR MONEY ON THIS UPGRADE

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

I was happy to see the CE level II Armor available...Ordered immediately and it arrived promptly...I like the flex and airflow design of the new armor...The old was comfortable with 10K + miles on it...This new should be Even more so.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

I have been using Bohn shirts and pants for over 20 years. This armor upgrade makes their product even better and more comfortable. I hope they will provide a Level 2 piece for the tailbone either as a replacement or an addon option. Fit and durability of Bohn garments and zippers has always been first-rate.

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Love the flexibility of the new thigh pads. Much easier when nature calls for women. Enjoyed my old set, love these!

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

Lighter weight, flexible and, more comfortable than level 1. Perfect upgrade

Pants Kit - Bohn Pants

To be quite honest. My experience with customer service and my experience with the new armor is equally excellent. I owe all of this to Kristen working at on Bohn. When I was having trouble trying to figure out the correct size on my original order, Kristen made multiple follow up emails and phone calls to make sure my pants and armor were right for me. Don't hesitate to call Bohn and get some advise on sizing. This is what customer service is supposed to feel like... Now to the bottom line. The new armor is excellent in all around feel, flexibility, weight, and breathability. It has a much better ability to conform to the body and will maintain its position without moving or migrating better than the original armor. I will keep this short and simple. If you have the old armor swap it out with this new level of safety and comfort. This is a "take my money" kind of purchase. You will not regret it. Hey Kristan! Thanks again. Ride safe, -Scott from Wisco
