Best Armored Hoodie for Motorcycle Riding: A Safer Alternative

Best Armored Hoodie for Motorcycle Riding: A Safer Alternative

Wearing a motorcycle armored hoodie sounds like the perfect compromise: the casual comfort and look of a hoodie, with the protection of a motorcycle jacket.

But the truth is a lot murkier… Most riders don't realize that the very thing they love about a hoodie – that loose, comfortable fit – is its biggest safety flaw when that hoodie is also carrying the armor that’s supposed to protect you in a crash.

In the store, that elbow armor might fit just right. But when you hit the ground, that loose fit is going to allow it to simply twist around – rendering it useless!

I've spent nearly a decade at Bohn Body Armor helping riders find gear that actually works, and I can tell you that if your armor can move two inches to the left, it won't be there to catch you when you hit the ground.

But there is a solution so you can wear your hoodie on the bike and still get all the impact and abrasion protection you need.

The Secret to Making a Hoodie Actually Protective

If you look at the most popular armored hoodies on the market from brands like Alpinestars or Roadskin, they all suffer from the same core flaw: A hoodie is designed to be relaxed, but for armor to mitigate damage effectively, it needs to be held snugly against your joints.

When you crash, you don't just slide; you bump and roll. If your elbow armor is floating inside a baggy sleeve, the first thing that happens when you hit the pavement is the fabric shifts, and the armor rotates away from your joint.

You’re left hitting the asphalt with nothing but a layer of cotton or polyester (maybe with a Kevlar patch) between your bone and the road.

The solution? Separate the impact protection from the hoodie, which should only be trusted with abrasion resistance (and no, thick cotton is not abrasion resistant!)

By wearing a dedicated armored underlayer – like a Bohn armored shirt – directly against your skin, the armor stays exactly where it should be. You can then throw any motorcycle hoodie you want on top for that cruiser style and abrasion resistance.

This "invisible protection" gives you the freedom to enjoy the casual comfort of a hoodie without sacrificing your safety.

Top Recommended Hoodies for Cruiser Riders

When you’re looking for a hoodie to pair with your armor, you want something that offers serious abrasion resistance. Here are a few standouts in the market that provide great outer-layer protection.

Bohn Armored All-Season Kevlar® Hoodie

We designed this hoodie for riders who want the classic sweatshirt look, without the usual safety compromises that come with loose, armor-carrying hoodies.

It’s a heavy-duty fleece that feels soft, broken-in, and comfortable right off the rack. The fit is slightly more snug than a typical casual hoodie, with enough stretch to help keep everything sitting where it should, so you are not fighting bunching, twisting, or that sloppy “floating” feel.

Just as important, it’s fully lined with DuPont™ Kevlar® throughout the entire garment, not just in small reinforcement patches. That means you get consistent abrasion protection across the whole hoodie if you end up in a slide.

And here’s the part most riders love once they already own Bohn gear: the armor in this sweatshirt is the same armor used across our tops, and it’s interchangeable. If you already have one of our armored shirts or jackets, you can move your existing armor into the hoodie and go. One armor set, multiple shells, same protection setup.

Here’s what one of our customers thinks of our sweatshirt:

Like with all of the Bohn offerings, this is a solid hoodie. Well constructed, and heavier than expected. Wearing it, you don't notice the weight. It feels like this is perfect for 45-70 degrees at the most. Today I'm wearing it as it's windy and 65 and it's plenty warm. Highly recommended!

Alpinestars Chrome Ignition Hoodie

This is a popular choice for urban riders because it looks exactly like a standard piece of streetwear. It features internal aramid fiber reinforcements on the shoulders, elbows, and back.

While it comes with Nucleon Flex Plus protectors, many of our customers choose to remove them and wear their Bohn shirt underneath to ensure the armor doesn't shift during a ride.

Speed and Strength Go For Broke 2.0 Hoody

The Go For Broke 2.0 is a favorite for riders who want a bit more "edge" to their style. It features a cotton-poly blend with thread-through reinforcements at the shoulders and elbows.

While it has a casual, lightweight feel that’s great for hop-on, hop-off city riding, that lighter construction means the fabric can shift easily. We recommend pairing this with an under-layer shirt to ensure your elbow and shoulder protection stays locked in place if you ever have to "go for broke" on the asphalt.

Why Armor Placement is Non-Negotiable

In my 25+ years in this industry, I have seen countless riders struggle with gear that pinches or feels restrictive. This often leads people to skip wearing gear entirely when it gets hot or humid, or wear loose gear, which are both dangerous decisions to make.

Traditional motorcycle gear often feels out of place because it’s trying to do two jobs at once: stay loose for comfort and stay tight for safety. These are opposing goals.

When you use an underlayer system, you get a snug, body-close fit that is surprisingly comfortable.

Our Bohn shirts are made with breathable fabrics like Cool Air mesh or Lycra™, which wick away sweat and keep you cool. Because the armor – like our 5 x 12-inch CE-Level 2 elbow and forearm protection from SAS-TEC – is held snugly against your body in an athletic-wear fit, it moves with you and stays comfortable.

Choosing the Right Bohn Underlayer for your Hoodie

Since a hoodie is naturally a loose garment, we recommend pairing our hoodie (for abrasion protection) with our underlayer “shirts” for impact protection.

Depending on your needs and climate, we have a few different shirt options to choose from. You can also buy multiple shirts without the armor (we call them “shells”), to keep as spares or for different temps.

Pairing both together gives you the best of both worlds: Hoodie style and comfort, with snug, body-fitting armor protection.

Cool-Air Mesh for Extreme Heat

When the humidity in places like Florida or Texas hits its peak, you need maximum airflow. Our Cool Air Mesh shirts are designed to be worn under a lightweight hoodie.

The mesh allows every bit of breeze to reach your skin while keeping your CE-Level 2 elbow, forearm, shoulder, and back armor from SAS-TEC perfectly positioned.

All-Season Airtex for Year-Round Comfort

If you want one shirt that does it all, the Airtex is the way to go. It’s soft, stretchy, and provides a great balance of breathability and coverage that works well from spring through fall.

It feels like high-quality athletic wear but houses professional-grade protection that disappears under your hoodie.

Performance Thermal for Cold Weather Rides

Don't let the season end just because the temperature drops. Our Performance Thermal layers are designed to add 10-15 degrees ℉ of warmth to your ride.

By wearing this under your hoodie, you trap body heat while maintaining that low-profile look, helping you stay out on the road longer into the winter months.

Don’t Forget Lower Body Protection!

While a hoodie protects your upper body, many riders often forget about their hips and knees. Most "motorcycle jeans" have the same problem as hoodies: the knee pads fall down to your shins when you're walking, or they shift to the side when you're in the saddle.

Pairing your hoodie with armored pants or shorts underneath your regular jeans gives you that integrated, comfortable impact protection without added weight or heat.

Bohn’s armored pants cover more zones than most garments, including the 5.25 x 12-inch knee and shin armor, plus protection for the hips, thighs, and tailbone. This setup allows you to wear your favorite pair of broken-in jeans while having better impact protection than most dedicated racing pants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just put armor into a regular hoodie I already own?

Most regular hoodies don't have pockets for armor, and even if you sew them in, the fabric isn't strong enough to hold the pads in place during a crash. A better solution is to wear an armored base layer shirt under your favorite hoodie. This ensures the armor stays on your joints while the hoodie provides a layer of style and some basic wind protection.

Is an armored hoodie as safe as a leather jacket?

Leather is still the king of abrasion resistance for long, high-speed slides. However, a high-quality hoodie fully lined with Kevlar® and paired with CE-Level 2 armor is excellent for urban and suburban riding. It’s often much more comfortable and breathable than leather, which means you’re more likely to actually wear it every time you hop on the bike.

How should a motorcycle hoodie fit?

It should be comfortable but not so loose that it flaps violently at high speeds. If the hoodie has built-in armor, it needs to be snug enough that the pads don't rotate around your arms. If you’re wearing armor underneath, you can size the hoodie more for style and comfort, as the base layer is doing the heavy lifting for your safety.

What is the difference between CE-Level 1 and CE-Level 2 armor?

CE-Level 2 is the top level available and provides significantly better impact absorption than Level 1. For key zones like the back, shoulders, and elbows, we always recommend Level 2. It’s a bit thicker, but with modern viscoelastic foams like those from SAS-TEC, it remains flexible and comfortable for all-day wear.

Are armored hoodies waterproof?

Most are cotton, which absorbs water. Those that are water-resistant may be able to handle a light 20-30 minute drizzle, but they will eventually soak through in a downpour. If you ride in the rain often, look for a soft-shell jacket with a dedicated waterproof membrane, but keep in mind these will be less breathable in the heat.

How do I wash my armored hoodie?

Always remove the armor first! Most armored hoodies can be machine washed on a gentle cycle once the pads are out. This is one of the big benefits of Bohn’s removable armor system—it makes it incredibly easy to keep your gear smelling fresh without damaging the protective inserts.
